CASA DAS CALHETAS - CALHETAS, RIBEIRA GRANDE

Situated on the north coast of the island of São Miguel, the oceanside estate known as "Casa das Calhetas", dates back to the 18th century (1723). This manor house has always been the residence of "Morgados".

The villa has an architectural structure of the wealthy houses of the Azorean countryside of the time, with an English style garden, with a pond and cricket field. The interior patio, in ploughed stone, has a double staircase in the Spanish colonial style. On the first floor is the noble part of the house where the bedrooms, the dining room, a living room and the library are located, the floors are in resinous pine wood and the ceilings in stucco, with a boxed structure. On this floor there are two halls with pedra de lavoura floors, a fireplace with tiles from Lagoa and a kitchen with direct access to the porches.

All the rooms have a cast iron balcony with views to the Ribeira Grande Bullet. Views to the north and northeast offer a stunning backdrop over the Atlantic, the north coast of the island and the mountains of Lagoa do Fogo, while views to the southwest unveil a setting that includes the only cloistered convent in the Azores and the house garden.

The building has several cellars, where wine was formerly made, with a structure typical of Ribeira Grande's wineries.
