The municipality of Castro Verde is situated in the heart of the "White Field", through the plains of Alentejo hills abutting the Cauldron. Located in the district of Beja, the municipality of Castro Verde is limited to the north by the districts of Beja and Aljustrel, the south by the municipality of Almodovar, east by Mértola and in the west by the municipality of Ourique.
With an area of 567.2 km2 and a population of approximately 8000 inhabitants, distributed in about a score of towns small and medium size, is divided administratively into five parishes: Casével, Castro Verde, Inputs, San Marcos and Santa Barbara Atabueira of Standards. The municipality of Castro Verde is crossed by one of the most significant metallogenic provinces in the world, the Iberian Pyrite Belt, where you can find deposits of polymetallic sulphides which, by their size and the metal content contained therein (Cu, Pb, Zn , SN, Au, Ag, etc..) may lie within its kind, among the most important worldwide. Result of this geological specificity, the county has one of the most important extractive industries of our country, fundamental reason for the increase of population of Castro Verde in the 80s and 90s, against the general trend of the hinterland, reversing the situation of population growth negative since it was in the 40s of the twentieth century.
