CASA DO CAMPO - FERMIL DE BASTO, CELORICO DE BASTO
Casa do Campo is a charming country manor house in an unspoilt, beautiful area high up in the hills above the Tâmega River. This impressive two-story stone and stucco house is fronted by a wall enclosing a beautiful small Renaissance chapel where mass is still held.
It is a very large estate, owned by a numerous family, so it is not surprising that the family has renovated some of the bedrooms for guests. All the guestrooms are bright and inviting and each is individually furnished using beautiful antiques.
On entering the splendid gateway of this noble 17th century manor house, one immediately detects the pervading floral scent. Casa do Campo boasts a prize-winning garden, with its immaculately trimmed Camellias contoured into graceful designs. A terrace above the mansion is a fantasy land created by camellias, some dating back 200 years, and probably there is no other display of camellias quite like this anywhere in the world. Over the centuries the plants have been trained to form an intricate, magical world of covered pathways interspersed with fountains and even whimsical houses whose roofs and walls are also made of Camellias. Specialists claim that the oldest Camellia in Portugal is to be found here.
