Casa do Ameal is an ancient and noble Minho house probably built in the 16th century though the exact date is unknown. It is recorded, however, that in 1669 the ancestors of the current owners, the Faria de Araújo family, purchased Casa do Ameal for just 3,500 shillings.
This surprising manor house, located at about 1 km from Viana do Castelo, has its own handicrafts and costumes museum and its original architecture is beautifully preserved. In keeping with traditional Minho noble houses the entrance courtyard is adorned with a stone fountain and pond. It is encompassed by ancient verdant trees offering a pleasant atmosphere and guaranteeing total privacy.
This home of over more than four hundred years of fascinating history also allows its visitors to bustle either into the quietness of the Ribeira Lima landscapes or into the charming movement of a small town daily life.

HISTORY
Since the 17th century, Casa do Ameal is property of the same family. It was purchased for 3.500 shillings, by record of 20 February 1669. In the outside, there is the coat of farms of the Family.
In the year of 1805 Leonel de Abreu e Lima was born, Lord of the Royal House, who died with no children. By his will the House belonged to his single sisters. The last of these ladies, established their heir, her cousin João Pereira de Faria Araújo, grandfather of present owners.
After a violent fire, about two hundred years ago, the House was restored. At this time, a pond was built in front of the House, in order to be useful in case of other calamity.
This House is situated in the region of "Ribeira Lima". Distant from Oporto 70 Km, and 1 Km from the centre of Viana, which allows the visitors to be introduced to the most paradisiac life and landscape of the Northern Portugal.
